Celebrate All Things Dog During National Dog Week 2012

National Dog Week

Did you know?  It’s Dog Week!  National Dog Week 2012 is Sept. 24th through the 30th.

This week is an opportunity to celebrate the dogs who enrich our lives as well help those dogs less fortunate than ours. So, grab your leashes, treats, and checkbooks and get ready to celebrate all things dog! National Dog Week 2012

This year marks the 84th anniversary of National Dog Week. In 1928, Captain William Lewis Judy recognized how much pets enrich our lives. His passion and enthusiasm inspired him to establish National Dog Week with some basic goals in mind. Each year, across the nation, dog lovers unite for the sake of our four-legged friends and take a stand for:

  • A good home for every dog
  • Elimination of stray dogs from the street
  • Better-informed and more responsible dog owners
  • Respect for dogs and all animals
  • Emphasis of the dog’s use as companion, worker, and protector
  • Fair laws for dogs and dog owners
  • Respect for the rights of non-dog owners

How can you participate?

Do for yours

  • Have fun and engage your dog by teaching a new trick or behavior
  • Make some healthy, homemade treats for your dog
  • Update your pets microchip info and ID tags
  • If your dog is friendly with other dogs host a “Yappy Hour” play group for both dogs and the owners
  • Take your dog on an extra special, long, fun walk to someplace new

Do for others

  • Volunteer at an animal shelter
  • If  you don’t have money to give, donate your old blankets, sheets, and towels to a rescue. Remember ALWAYS donate locally so you know how your money is being spent
  • Participate at a local fundraising event
  • Foster an animal in need
  • Offer to walk an elderly neighbor’s dog who may not get enough exercise
  • Collect items to donate to our military dogs

Me?  I just moved to a new neighborhood.  This week I’m taking pictures of my neighbor’s dogs and sending them a greeting card with the picture on it.  I’m having a blast meeting new people and getting to know the dogs in the neighborhood!

So, what will you do to celebrate National Dog Week?

Earth Day is For the Dogs!

Earth Day

Going “Green” is important not just for humans.  Your dog wants to help save the planet too!

There are a number of ways that you and your dog can participate in Earth Day.Earth Day

1.  Instead of filling the landfill with more plastic try using Biodegradable Waste Bags instead.  The bags decompose in about the same time as an apple.

2.  Recycle your old blankets and sheets and donate them to your local shelter.

3.  Consider switching your dog to a healthy, natural dog food.  Natural is better for your dog as well as for the environment.

4.  Check your household cleaning products and make sure you’re using ones that are chemical-free and therefore, not contributing to harmful runoff into our ground and water sources.

5.  Instead of driving to the dog park or beach consider walking, running, or bicycling with your dog instead.  Both you and your dog will get more exercise and not burn gasoline.

6.  The next time you are looking for a new collar or leash for your pup check out some of the new eco-friendly dog gear!  Your dog can be comfortable, green and stylish!

Get Your Dog Off the Floor and Into a Cool Personalized Dog Bed

My brother’s family’s German Shepherd Dog was recently diagnosed with allergies.  He is constantly scratching and itchy.  It turns out that he’s allergic to wool.  Wouldn’t you know that my brother has the most beautiful (and expensive) wool carpets throughout his home.

Barring ripping out the carpets, the vet has recommend a dog bed for poor Riddick.  With a dog bed he’ll sleep up off of the carpets and hopefully his allergies will clear up.

So I went on a mission to find a really cool dog bed for this guy.  Take a look at what I found!

Check out these one-of-a-kind personalized dog beds!

You can have your own dog’s picture on this personalized dog bed
